The Hanoi Review of Japanese Studies: Bringing VNU-USSH Faculty and Student Research Closer to the World

Research topics from faculty and students of the Department of Oriental Studies, VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU-USSH), have been presented to the review board of The Hanoi Review of Japanese Studies and are expected to be published in 2024.
Recently, within the framework of the cooperation of the Key Agency Program for Japanese Studies between the University of Tokyo and Vietnam National University, Hanoi (Zensho-UT Japan Studies Program in VNU Hanoi, JSPH), scholars from the Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Oriental Studies, VNU-USSH participated in the Zensho Japan-Vietnam Japanology Forum. This forum is a venue where students, researchers, and emerging scholars present their research findings and engage with leading professors from the University of Tokyo and other Japanese universities. In November 2023, at the third reporting session of the forum, four doctoral students from the first cohort of the Japanese Studies program at VNU-USSH presented their research orientations.
The topics include: “International Marriage between Vietnam and Japan - Analysis of Cases with Vietnamese Wives and Japanese Husbands” by Ph.D. candidate Pham Quynh Lien; “Support for Families with Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Japan - Experiences for Vietnam” by Ph.D. candidate Tran Viet Ha; “Specific Skill System of Japan - Prospects and Challenges” by Ph.D. candidate Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao; “Images of Children in Han Poetry and Haikai Poetry in the Late Edo Period” by Ph.D. candidate Do Thi Mai.
Alongside the Japan Research Forum, both sides have agreed to cooperate in editing and publishing the Journal of Japanese Studies - Hanoi with the publication code ISSN 2758-4453 (online journal) under the publication list of the University of Tokyo. This research journal employs an independent peer-review system, aiming to become a high-quality journal that publishes the latest research findings of Japanese Studies researchers from Vietnam, Japan, and around the world. The journal is expected to publish its first issue in 2024.
Since November 2011, the Japanese Research Support Program has sought to promote the development of Japanese Studies in Vietnam and is one of the activities of the “Asian Talent Training Support” of the Zensho Group for the University of Tokyo. The program is in its third five-year phase at VNU-USSH. It has actively supported the teaching and learning of faculty and students, graduate students of the Department of Japanese Studies, and has achieved specific results in equipping facilities, hosting graduate students studying at the University of Tokyo, organizing concentrated courses on Japan, organizing short-term internships at the University of Tokyo, inviting Vietnamese lecturers to conduct research at the University of Tokyo, organizing library management seminars, organizing the Japan-Vietnam Research Forum “Hanoi Rondo”, organizing reading hours on ethnology… From 2022, the program has entered phase 3, focusing on enhancing the capacity of students, researchers, and young researchers through the Japan Research Forum (Zensho Japan-Vietnam Japanology Forum).

The program has brought many learning and research opportunities for the staff, lecturers, and students of VNU-USSH in general and the Japanese Studies in particular.
